Aston Villa had yet to be beaten in the Barclays Premier League and were more than a match for Arsenal until they conceded three goals in 3mins15secs – the quickest instance of three goals being scored by a single BPL side since records began in 2006-07 – towards the end of the first half.
Mesut Ozil gave the Gunners the lead on 32 minutes with a composed finish after racing on to a through-ball from Danny Welbeck, and the Germany international returned the favour in the visitors' next attack, crossing from the left for Welbeck to register his first Arsenal goal from close range. And on 36 minutes it was 3-0 when Kieran Gibbs’ cross-shot was turned into his own net by Aly Cissokho, exactly 195 seconds after the north Londoners’ first goal.
Newcastle rallied from a two-goal deficit to share a 2-2 draw with Hull at St James’ Park. The Magpies appeared destined for a third defeat of the campaign when Nikica Jelavic broke the deadlock for Steve Bruce’s side early in the second half and Mohamed Diame produced his second league goal in as many matches since joining the Tigers from West Ham United. However, substitute Papiss Demba Cisse turned the tide for Alan Pardew’s side with two goals in the last 17 minutes.
Liverpool's stuttering start to the Barclays Premier League season continued as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat at West Ham United, their third loss from the opening five matches. Winston Reid and Diafra Sakho capitalised on poor defending to give the hosts a surprise lead just seven minutes in at the Boleyn Ground. Although Raheem Sterling provided hope for the visitors with a 26th-minute goal, West Ham defended well to secure all three points, with substitute Morgan Amalfitano making the match safe late on. The result marked the Londoners' first home Barclays Premier League win of the campaign, while Liverpool's early title ambitions were again exposed after their defeat at home to
Southampton got the better of Swansea City with a narrow win at the Liberty Stadium. There was little to choose between two sides who have made an encouraging start to the BPL season but the first-half dismissal of Wilfried Bony limited the hosts’ attacking potential against Saints, who took all three points to move up to second place, thanks to Victor Wanyama’s 80th-minute strike.
Elsewhere, Burnley registered their third goalless draw in succession as they were held at Turf Moor by Sunderland. Each side came close to scoring late on with Ashley Barnes hitting the bar for Burnley and Patrick van Aanholt striking a post for Sunderland..
Earlier in the day Queens Park Rangers salvaged a point despite twice falling behind against Stoke
City at Loftus Road. Niko Kranjcar's late free-kick denied Mark Hughes, the Stoke manager, a winning return to Loftus Road after the Potters had taken the lead in each half through Mame Biram Diouf and Peter Crouch respectively. Steven Caulker made it 1-1, heading in Jordon Mutch's cross past the Stoke players on the line late in the first half. Then, after Crouch had struck his first goal of the season on 51 minutes, Kranjcar ruined Hughes' reacquaintance with the ground at which he struggled as manager two years ago with a curling free-kick into the top corner with two minutes to go.
