Radamel Falcao faced the press on Thursday for the first time since his transfer to Manchester United and, as you would expect, said all the right things as he sat alongside manager Louis van Gaal.
Exciting times
It is perhaps patronising to praise someone on their grasp of the
English language, but Falcao impressed with the clarity and
expressiveness of his answers and, more importantly, the content as
well.
One thing in particular Falcao said that will excite Manchester
United supporters is that the club are an ideal fit for his style of
play, and he and they will be hoping there will be goals aplenty over
the course of the campaign.
"Manchester United is the best club for my style of play and I am sure of my decision,” Falcao explained. “This period in the future will be great."
Injury problems
Falcao is expected, barring any catastrophe, to make his Manchester
United debut against Queens Park Rangers this weekend and confirmed that
he has “confidence” in his knee amid concerns about his long-term
fitness.
The 28-year-old, of course, sustained cruciate ligament damage
playing for Monaco last season, an injury which resulted in him missing
the World Cup, and there were naturally question marks when he arrived
at Old Trafford, with the loan deal set to cost a massive £24 million.
While there may be doubt about the player’s knee, his goalscoring
record is something that cannot be questioned. In his last 200 club
appearances, for Porto, Atletico Madrid and Monaco, Falcao has found the
net on 155 occasions - quite a statistic.
Where will he fit?
It will now be interesting how Van Gaal approaches his forward
options, for the QPR encounter and beyond. Initially it had been assumed
that Falcao would play ahead of Robin van Persie given his own fitness
worries, but Van Gaal has confirmed the Dutchman is ‘fitter than ever’.
Van Persie would still appear the player most likely to miss out
should Falcao play from the start, with Wayne Rooney’s status as club
captain clearly placing him on a firmer footing than the ex-Arsenal
skipper. Given that Manchester United will only be involved in the league and
FA Cup for the remainder of this season, there no great need for
frequent rotation up top, so Falcao will be eager to prove a point as
quickly as possible.
