Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have agreed a deal with
Liverpool for the transfer of goalkeeper Pepe Reina for a reported fee
of £2.5 million, according to the Daily Mail.
The Spanish international will undergo a medical in Munich on Wednesday before signing his contract with the German giants. After eight seasons with the Merseyside outfit, Reina was sent on loan to Serie A side Napoli following the appointment of manager Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.
Reina was out-of-favour with Rodgers, who preferred Belgian Simon Mignolet ahead of the Spaniard. Making 41 appearances for Napoli, the 31-year-old returned to join his Liverpool team-mates on their pre-season tour of the United States this season, but didn't feature in any games for the Reds. Clubs like AC Milan and Napoli expressed interest to sign him permanently but were put off by the player’s wage demands of £110,000-per-week, according to The Guardian.
The World Cup 2010 winner will serve as the perfect back-up to Manuel Neuer and would also join former team-mate at Barcelona and now manager of Bayern Munich, Pep Guardiola.
The Independent reports Liverpool offered Napoli the option to buy him but Rafael Benitez was not inclined to meet Liverpool’s demand and activate Reina’s release clause of £3.95 million.
Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: ”The player will come to Munich in the next few days for a medical examination and sign his contract.”
He further added: ”He( Reina) was eager to come to Bayern Munich. He wanted to embark on this adventure even though he knows that in Manuel Neuer, he has a keeper in front of him who, if nothing changes,will always remain the number one”.
The three time Premier League Golden Glove winner will move to the Bavarians at Allianz Arena having made 394 appearances for Liverpool since 2005 as well as earning 33 caps for Spain.
