Express Sport exclusively revealed at the end of June that Louis Van Gaal was weighing up a move for De Jong.
And according to Goal, talks are now underway over a possible move. It is thought that De Jong - formerly of Manchester City - could be available for £8m. United's
executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward reportedly met with De Jong's
representatives in London yesterday to discuss a move.
And
it is thought that De Jong has responded positively to the prospect of
working under Van Gaal again having worked with the manager during his
time in the Dutch national time.
The move could
indicate that Van Gaal is ready to move on from Arturo Vidal with the
Chilean midfielder now looking increasingly likely to stay at Juventus. While
the 29-year-old is unlikely to be a long term solution to United's
midfield problems, he would be an able replacement for Michael Carrick
who will miss the start of the season with an ankle injury.
Furthermore,
De Jong would enable Van Gaal to get through to January with his
midfield in tact before making a move for top target Kevin Strootman,
who is also recovering from injury. It now
remains to be seen whether United can tie up a deal with Milan that
would see De Jong winging his way back to Manchester, this time to play
for the Red Devils.
