Top 5: Best Englishmen in the Premier League

There has often been concern that English players are under-represented in the Premier League; that is undoubtedly true.

It therefore is all-the-more impressive that a large number of Englishmen have been performing brilliantly this season, take a look at the top five by clicking through the pages.
Comment if you disagree!

5. Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw deserves to be on this list, given his hugely impressive performances as Southampton’s first choice left-back, despite the fact that he is only 18-years-old.
The academy graduate only made his Premier League debut last season, but has so far played in 32 of the club’s league games.
Not only is Shaw defensively solid, he is also brilliant going forward, and has attracted serious attention from Manchester United and Chelsea.
Additionally, he has caught the eye of England manager Roy Hodgson and is in with a chance of making it in the World Cup squad, despite fierce competition at left-back.

4. Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney has been impressive this season, scoring 15 goals in 28 appearances.
This goal return is despite being part of a poor Manchester United side that has gone from winning the Premier League last season, to sitting outside of the top four in seventh place.
Given that Rooney is often liable to perform badly when affected psychologically, it is a positive sign that he has managed to maintain his brilliant standard throughout the current campaign.
As well as his 15 goals, the former Everton player has also managed 10 assists, once again proving his value to David Moyes’ United side.

3. Adam Lallana

Adam Lallana has proven that players who work their way through the lower leagues are just as good, if not better, than those who spend their early years at big clubs.
The player has played at Southampton for the entirety of his career, following them through administration and their relegation to league one.
As the club have climbed back up the leagues, Lallana has continued to raise his game, and has done so in his second season in the Premier League.
The winger has scored 9 goals this season and has also contributed an impressive six assists.
Mauricio Pochettino – Southampton’s manager – said after a victory over Newcastle in which Lallana had starred, "I am always telling him (Lallana) that he has the characteristics of a Spanish player and he has the skills of an Iniesta, Xavi or Cesc Fábregas.
“Adam is special. He is a very unique player."

2. Daniel Sturridge

Gerrard’s teammate Daniel Sturridge has been amazing this season and has formed a wonderfully productive partnership with Luis Suarez.
Individually, the Englishman has scored 20 goals in 26 league appearances for Liverpool.
He has also contributed with seven assists and all-round brilliant play.
Given that the player was regarded as someone who wasn’t able to cut it at previous clubs Manchester City and Chelsea, Sturridge has proven his doubters wrong by showing consistency since he arrived in January 2013.

1. Steven Gerrard

The Liverpool and England captain has been an ever-present figure in Brendan Rodgers’ side this season and has been instrumental in the club’s drive towards the Premier League title.
Consider the fact that, from January, Gerrard was asked to play in front of the back four in role that would accommodate both his age and the dynamics of the squad.
Despite having to give up his rampant attacking instincts and become more disciplined, Gerrard has shined in his new role.
Reminiscent of Paul Scholes’ similar adaptation into a defensive midfielder, Gerrard has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season.
The Liverpudlian has still managed to score 13 goals this season, even though he has adapted his style of play.
He undoubtedly deserves top spot for his amazing consistency and his huge contribution to a likely Premier League title win.
