David Moyes was ecstatic with Manchester United display against Almighty Bayern

Manchester United manager David Moyes has declared himself "delighted" following a spirited effort from his players against reigning Champions League holders Bayern Munich tonight, roaring that a 1-1 draw gives them every chance of progressing to the semi-finals next week.

United were forced to settle for a watching brief for large periods as Bayern dominated possession at Old Trafford, but were always a threat going forward and took the lead on 58 minutes courtesy of a pinpoint header from Nemanja Vidic.

Bayern managed to respond courtesy of a strike from Bastian Schweinsteiger, who got himself sent off for a second bookable offence late on, but United were more than a match for Pep Guardiola's men over the 90 minutes.

Moyes had reason to be relatively pleased on full-time, insisting that United's primary goal of staying alive in the tie ahead of next week's return at the Allianz Arena has been achieved with flying colours.

In his post-match interview with United boss told ITV: "The players played really well so we're delighted but just a bit disappointed that we conceded in the end.

"There was a real determination to make sure we did well, the players realised we were playing a really good side tonight.

"We know we've got to score a goal in the second leg. We have to do something about it. But we know we've given ourselves a great opportunity."

United face Bayern again at the Allianz next Wednesday knowing that they must score to earn shock progression to the semi-finals, although the hosts will be without key men Javi Martinez and Schweinsteiger through suspension.
