Manchester City are preparing to hand Arsenal
target Edin Dzeko a new contract, but will offer him less than the
£150,000-a-week he currently earns at the Etihad Stadium in order to
fall in line with Financial Fair Play rules.
According to The Sun, the 28-year-old striker will be rewarded for his fine form this season with the option to extend his existing deal, which is set to expire next summer.
Citizens boss Manuel Pellegrini has been impressed with Dzeko's contribution, having netted 23 goals in all competitions in 2013/14, and wants to ward off rival interest in the Bosnia international's signature.
Inter Milan, Valencia, Borussia Dortmund and ex-club Wolfsburg have all been monitoring the player's situation closely, while Arsenal - according to the Daily Mirror in February - have also been weighing up an attempt to lure Dzeko to north London.
Arsene Wenger is known to be in the market for striker reinforcements in the summer, and could provide competition for Olivier Giroud by luring the Manchester City star to the Emirates Stadium.
City's new pay strategy will eventually hit all of the club's first-team stars, with director of football Txiki Begiristain planning to introduce performance related bonuses across the board.
It's not yet clear whether the new structure will affect Dzeko's future at the club, but should he seek a move away then he is unlikely to be short of options.
