Bayern Munich warmed up for their Champions League clash with
Arsenal, by thrashing Wolfsburg 6-1 to set a new record of 16
successive victories in the Bundesliga.
Despite falling behind, five second-half goals gave Bayern a dominant
victory in their final game before hosting Arsenal in the Champions
League on Tuesday.
The sides meet in the last 16 of Europe's elite competition, with the
Gunners looking to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the Emirates last month,
in what looks a near on improbable task given the Germans devastating
form of late.
Since defeating Arsene Wenger's side, the Champions League holders
have scored 15 goals in three games, with today's victory leaving them
23 points ahead of second place Borussia Dortmund at the top of the
table.
Surprisingly it was Wolfsburg who took the lead, when centre-half
Naldo opened the scoring after 17 minutes after turning home Kevin De
Bruyne's accurate cross.
However, it wasn't long before Pep Guardiola's sides leveled the
match through Xherdan Shaqiri who rifled home a fierce shot off the bar
following a scramble in the penalty box.
Wolfsburg were able to keep the scores level until midway through the
second period, before the champions stepped up a gear, tearing their
opponents apart with five goals in a blistering 17-minute spell.
Thomas Muller gave Bayern the lead, rounding the goalkeeper after a
fine pass from Thiago, before Mario Mandzukic scored just three minutes
later as he turned home a cross from Rafinha.
Frank Ribery struck next with a powerful drive following good play
from Arjen Robben, before Muller and Mandzukic both found the scoresheet
once again to complete the rout, and take Bayern's unbeaten run in the
league to a phenominal 49 games.
