José Riga has been appointed Charlton's new head coach after the club sacked Chris Powell.
Powell, 44, was believed to be in negotiations with owner Roland Duchâtelet over a new contract.
However, the pair's relationship fractured beyond repair following
disagreements in recent weeks, while the Addicks fell to the foot of the
Championship league table.
Riga, the former Standard Liège assistant manager, will be in charge for the game against Huddersfield at home on Wednesday.
Riga will be assisted by Karel Fraeye, currently head coach of the Belgian club Eendracht Zele.
Duchâtelet has close links with the Liège man, who completed a £14m takeover in January.
Though, Powell's team remain at the foot of the second tier, they do
boast four games in hand on those also in the relegation battle.
But a quarter-final defeat to Sheffield United in the FA Cup last
weekend proved to be the last straw for Duchâtelet, who ended the
44-year-old's three-year stint at the club.
A statement on Charlton's official website read: "José Riga has been appointed as Head Coach of Charlton Athletic, the club confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.
"The Belgian-born former Standard Liege boss will take charge of his
first game on Wednesday against Huddersfield Town at The Valley.
"Riga will work alongside Karel Fraeye, who also joins as Assistant Head Coach."
