Manchester City are the team to beat this season

Man City’s 9-0 demolition of West Ham in the Capital One Cup semi-final last night underlined why they are the team to beat this season, and why they are still competing for silverware in all four competitions.

City have scored an astonishing 106 goals in all competitions this season, and their world-class strike force of Alvaro Negredo, and the returning Sergio Aguero have struck fear into even the best defenders.

Combine this frightening attack with the incredible midfield combination of Yaya Toure, David Silva, Jesus Navas and the in-form Fernandinho, and you have a fine recipe for flare and creativity.

City simply cannot stop scoring, and with their 100% home record in the Premier League this season, their imperious attackers look set to continue dismantling defences.

The true test of Man City’s quadruple credentials however, will be when they host Barcelona in the Champions League last 16, but the Catalan outfit will surely be looking over their shoulder in heightened anticipation of their opponent’s fine form.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have a real chance of beating Barcelona, they have the strength-in-depth and the firepower to do so, but questions are likely to be asked of a City defence that is so heavily dependant on skipper Vincent Kompany.

The likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar are certain to cause City problems, but they know that they have the firepower to threaten Barca, and that only increases the excitement for what should be a mouth-watering encounter on the 18th February.

As for the Premier League, there is still a long way to go, and it looks as though it might go right down to the wire, but City are the bookmakers favourites and lie ominously in second place, just one point behind leaders Arsenal.

In the FA Cup, Pellegrini’s side host Championship strugglers Watford in the Fourth Round, and will be heavy favourites to make it to the Fifth Round, but as they discovered in last season’s FA Cup Final against Wigan, anything can happen.

Man City continue to fight for four, and Pellegrini’s side are staking a claim for an unprecedented quadruple, there are indeed sterner tests to come, but City remain the team to beat this season and are still on course for the quadruple.
