Premier League: Top 3 successful summer signings

Who were the best signings of the summer 2013 transfer window?

The following are what I regard to be the best three Premier League signings of 2013...

1. Man City's £20m signing of Alvaro Negredo has been a huge success. Already earning the nickname 'The Beast', he has proved why he demanded such a high fee to acquire his services.

With eight top-flight goals so far this season, Negredo has contributed greatly to City's title challenge. He and the currently injured Sergio Aguero have already formed a formidable partnership.

The variety of goals Negredo has scored demonstrates his versatility. For example, his goal from 20 yards against Spurs showed not only his shooting ability but his strength as he outmuscled the centre-back before firing into the top corner.

Negredo's close range tap-ins also show the quality of his positioning and he is always amongst the goals.

2. Arsenal's Mesut Özil has also proved his worth this season with a string of top-class performances. Although he has appeared to 'go missing' in the bigger games, Özil is still young and it will take time before he can achieve a high level of consistency.

£42m is a heavy price tag for him to carry, however, but so far he has acquitted himself well. Four goals and seven assists in 15 games speaks for itself, especially for a rather young player still adapting to the physicality of the Premier League.

3. Finally, the loan signing of Romelu Lukaku has been vital for Everton's top-four push so far this season. Although his form has cooled in recent weeks, he has bagged nine goals in the Premier League, placing him as sixth top scorer.

This is very good for a man of just 20 and sets him in good stead for the future. As to why Chelsea let him go remains a mystery, however. In my opinion, Roberto Martinez is the best man to guide him through the season and help him improve his game to reach new heights.
