Capital One Cup Review: Manchester United progresses as Tottenham woes continues

Manchester United made it through to the semi finals of the Capital One cup with a 2-0 victory away to Stoke City on Wednesday night. At White Hart lane, It was not the best of nights for the home team as maiga's goal sent West Ham into the last four at the expense of Tottenham.

David Moyes' men progress to thelast four of the Capital One Cup following a fine display at Stoke City last night. Two goals in the second 45 minute from two unsual goal scorers was all United needed to set up a semi final tie with Sunderland who defeated Chelsea a night earlier.

The game did not really come to life in the first half as there were no real goal chances, both teams struggled to keep possesion and find a tune to their game.

To complicate issues, the weather condition forced a ten minutes time out after just 28 minutes of play. The weather deteriorated so badly that Clattenburg halted the game after 28 minutes amid a hailstorm and swirling winds.

The introduction of Chicharito in the early part of the second half seems to be the turning point for the Red Devils. Although the Mexican did not get on the scoresheet, but he had a hand in Ashley Young's opener in the 62nd minutes. Young scored his first goal for Manchester United in 17 months to put the visitors in front.

Maybe Stoke could have gotten an equaliser had they been able to connect well with their crosses as the height of Peter Crouch caused no major problem for Smalling and Evans. Walters missed a glorious chance to draw level minutes later.

Stand in captain, Patrice Evra layed the game to bed with a superb right foot drive into the bottom corner. You don't get to see theFrench man use his right foot too many times, but last night's was exceptional.

The game ended 2-0 in favour of Manchester United. The result means Manchester United will be playing against Sunderland in the semi finals.

It was a different story for Tottenham at White Hart Lane as the Londoners continued their woes. Just after 3 days of Villas Boas' depature, assistant coach, Sherwood was unable to justify his ex-boss' sack as he lost his first game in charge.

Although, Tottenham dominated for most of the game but was unable to convert their chances as Adebayor, Townsend, Defoe and Lenon all missed scorable chances in the first half.

Despite this, Adebayor's first goal since May (seven months ago) would put the host ahead in the 67th minutes. What a superb technique from the Togolese, he side-footed his volley into the top left corner of the post, after connecting well with a Defoe's cross.

West Ham began to search for the equalizer. The Hammers' continous pressure payed off when Taylor played in Jarvis on the left side of the box and Jarvis did just well to beat the brilliant Hugo Lloris in goal.

Maiga had the last laugh of the game as he devastated the home fans with his winning goal from a header late in the game.

The outcome of the encounter means West Ham will be playing against Man City in the last four of the competition. What an interesting game it would be.
