Manchester United: 'What could have been' XI

A look at how Manchester United's current squad could have looked had certain players stayed;

Manchester United have a pretty decent starting line-up - they're the reigning Premier League champions, after all - but it could have looked very different had certain players stayed with the club.

Some left in order to play first-team football, others were forced out, while Cristiano Ronaldo is possibly the only player of the bunch who left in order to further his career and achieve a personal dream.

The £80m man, who now plies his trade at Real Madrid, would be a guaranteed starter on the left-hand side of the Red Devils' attack. Just inside him would be Wayne Rooney, providing service for Robin van Persie and scoring goals, just as he does today.

However, rather than Antonio Valencia - or Wilfried Zaha, who has yet to feature in a Premier League match - on the right-hand side, David Moyes could have opted to start with the versatile Carlos Tevez, who left Old Trafford in 2009 after Sir Alex Ferguson opted against signing him on a permanent deal.

The two central midfield positions are occupied by gifted starlets who United really should have done more to keep. Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison are currently flourishing at Juventus and West Ham, respectively.

The defence remains as it is today, with David de Gea in goal, Patrice Evra at left-back, Rafael on the right-hand side of defence and the rock-solid Nemanja Vidic at the heart of defence.

The only alteration is his centre-back partner, Gerard Pique, who has won more trophies than Ferguson would care to think about since rejoining Barcelona in 2008.
